Overview

The Combined course blends our Foundation course and Practitioner seminar. Each participant is first provided with a solid Foundation in MSP concepts, and is then provided with a Practitioners understanding of how to apply MSP in realistic scenarios and adapt MSP to different environments.

Course Objectives

The Foundation Course will:

  • Provide detailed explanations of MSP’s integrated elements and their relationships.
  • Explain the benefits thread through MSP that ensures that the entire programme is predicated and focussed on realisation of benefits.
  • Provide careful and detailed preparation for the Foundation Exam.

The Practitioner Seminar will:

  • Expand the participant’s understanding of the principles and philosophies underpinning MSP.
  • Provide participants with exposure to how MSP is applied in different programme environments.
  • Explain how MSP can be effectively applied to address the needs and problems of a specific programme scenario.
  • Provide careful and detailed preparation for the Practitioner Exam.

  • Experienced Programme Managers who need to be able to work effectively in an MSP environment.
  • Senior Project Managers wishing to move into programme management.
  • 'Centre of excellence' staff and strategy implementation planners who need a solid understanding of MSP to tailor the method for their organisations.
  • Project and programme support staff wanting to learn how to effectively operate in an MSP environment.
  • Anyone wishing to round out their resume with a formal internationally recognised project management certification.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Content

The Foundation course covers:

  • MSP's Principles.
  • Its Governance Themes, or approaches to critical aspects of programme management.
  • The MSP Transformational Flow or Process Model.
  • Adoption and implementation considerations.

The Practitioner Seminar is a scenario based training course focusing on the application of MSP under different environments and scenarios. Review and revision sessions of all MSP elements are included throughout the training.

There will be homework each evening.

Foundation Exam

The MSP Foundation Exam is a 40 minute closed book exam. There are 50 multiple choice questions. The candidate must correctly answer 60% or more of the questions to pass the exam.

Practitioner Exam

The MSP Practitioner Exam is a 2 hour, open manual, scenario based multiple choice exam. The candidate must provide responses to 9 questions presented in the following styles:

  • Classical multiple choice
  • Yes/No
  • Multiple response
  • Matching
  • Sequencing
  • Assertion/Reason

The maximum score for the exam is 180 marks. The candidate must score 50% or more marks to pass the exam. Candidates for the Practitioner Exam must have previously passed the Foundation Exam.

  • Our Pre-Course Reading Guide. We do recommend that participants complete 10 - 12 hours of pre-course reading, but this is not mandatory.
  • The MSP Manual
  • Foundation Delegate Workbook including activities, discussions, quizzes and sample exams
  • Practitioner Delegate Workbook including activities and sample exams
  • The MSP Desk Reference Chart
  • Lunch, and morning and afternoon refreshments

The pre-course pack consisting of the Pre-Course Reading Guide and the MSP Manual will be sent to all participants who complete registration at least 10 days before scheduled course start.

Follow-on Courses

We recommend that participants who complete this course should use MSP on their projects for 3 to 6 months. We then offer our MSP Advanced Practitioner seminar.

MSP Practitioners are required to re-register within 3-5 years of their original certification. We offer an MSP Reregistration seminar.
