Introduction to Risk Management

Course Code

RKI2

Overview

According to the ISO 31000 definition, risk is 'the effect of uncertainty on objectives'. This 'effect' can either be positive or negative, so we can think of risks as being either threats or opportunities. Therefore, risk management can be defined as the process of identification, assessment, prioritisation and action to take control of the probability and impact of risk, by coordinated application of available resources, in order to minimise the losses from possible threats and maximise the gains from possible opportunities. Risks can arise from uncertainties which exist in the external environment, strategy and policy settings, organisational change through programmes and projects, and business as usual operations.

Risk management has become an integral part of every business model.  In today’s business environment, risk management skills are becoming essential for managers across all levels of the organisation.

Introductory risk management is an excellent entry level course to the basic concepts of risk management using the ISO 31000 risk management standard as the foundation of the course. The course is designed to help non-risk professionals grasp the basic and most important concepts of risk management.
